Deerhead vs. AppleheadMost people have never heard of a Deerhead or Applehead. What they do not realize is that a lot of the Chihuahua mixes out their may be misidentified Deerheads. While Appleheads are the most widely recognized type.
Deerhead Chihuahuas are your most basic companion chihuahua. They are not bred for show and thus would never do well in the show ring due to no breed standard ever being developed for them...similar to the working line of the German Shepherd. They were bred primarily for companionship, replacements for women who could not have or lost a child and needed something to dote on, and as house and temple guardians. Deerheads and appleheads both have been noted in history all the way back to the aztecs so they both were developed around the same time. Deerheads got their name from the fact that when they lay down, or in general, they look like a fawn, a baby deer. Applehead Chihuahuas became the most saught after type due to the fact that they resemble newborns the most with their small noses, big heads, and big eyes on a little body. It causes a person to bond with them easier on a subconcious level...or so the theory suggests. Below is an example of both types. I personally like the "hybrid" type as i've come to call it. this type is where people have crossed the two types together. This gives the dog many positives from both sides and I think they are just a better companion because of it. Appleheads got their name because of their very round "apple" shapped heads.
